I'm excited to go to the artist talk with the class tomorrow! I've never attended one before and it's a pleasant surprise to know there'll be snacks. I'm also excited to meet the artist; I might ask for an autograph, haha.
I thought her artist statement was really well written and easy to follow. But besides the technicalities, I appreciate her fondness of childhood and the energy and color that's associated with it, and wanting to honor that in her art. It felt like a total throwback because I used to be really into the Carebears too. When I initially walked through the gallery prior to reading the artist statement I could feel that 80s vibe from the colors. The shapes, however, felt really modern; it got me like a really good plot twist. Now knowing the intent of the artist, I can more easily connect the psychedelic colors and patterns to the pieces. I can also relate strongly to her statement,
"I view pattern as a visual language that can cause physical reactions to the viewer."
because the colors make me want to dance. The shapes too, actually.
I specifically like how she continues the pattern through the negative spaces of her art. It's very visually interesting. I'm curious about the shape choosing process. They remind me of origami, in that it's very angular.
